Street art festivals are my favourite! The performances, the food, and the splendid art installations.

The Chale Wote Street Art Festival is a medium through which we elevate and celebrate our diverse African arts. The festival seeks to foster interactions amongst local and international artists and patrons through the creation and appreciation of art.

Since its inception in 2011, Chale Wote has featured street painting, graffiti murals, photography, drama, spoken word, interactive art installations, live street performances, extreme sports, film screenings, a fashion parade, a music block party, recyclable design workshops, and many more. It is the first of its kind in Accra, Ghana, and has sparked similar events throughout the country.

So far, there have been six iterations of the festival, with the first two lasting only one day each. While both the 2013 and 2014 editions spanned two days. The concept changed in 2016, when the festival spanned a complete week, from August 18th to August 21st. This year, the festival started on Friday, August 12th and ended on Sunday, August 21st.

In 2022, we celebrate the twelfth edition of the Chale Wote Street Art Festival in its 11th year taking place August 12 – 21, 2022 in Accra. The theme for this edition, ‘Stargate to Africa’ embraces the defiance of formal artistic boundaries and fragmentation of social experience through orature. This year’s theme draws indigenous artistic expressions into an interaction with orature; a probing that re-centers perceptions of what constitutes collectivity and power. Stargate to Africa represents a shift from the mechanical understanding of African super natural beliefs and ritual, to viewing them as frameworks of political thought. Chale Wote 2022 will unveil exciting work by dozens of interdisciplinary Ghanaian and international artists in design, performance art, murals, photography, Labs, music and salons.
